That in large part explains Rivers’ national reputation. All of the active quarterbacks ahead of him (Manning, Drew Brees, Tom Brady, Eli Manning and Ben Roethlisberger) have this in common: At least one Super Bowl ring.
But he has to throw because the Chargers’ running game has been inefficient, and there’s no assurance that the passing production won’t dip following the kidney injury that put Keenan Allen on injured reserve.īut consider this, too: Rivers, with 39,408 passing yards in 156 career games, is 17th on the NFL’s all-time list and sixth among active quarterbacks. He has 2,753 through eight games, and Manning’s record is 5,477. He’s on a pace to break Peyton Manning’s NFL single-season record for passing yards. Tonight’s “Monday Night Football” platform against the 2-5 Chicago Bears might be the last national showcase for Rivers this season.
This season might prove to be the worst of all, with a team that has lost a lot of close games not necessarily because of bad breaks but because they haven’t been deep enough and haven’t had enough players capable of making plays when needed. Dating to midseason 2014, the Chargers are 6-12. But in four of his past five seasons, San Diego hasn’t reached the playoffs.
